Today, as part of our Tuesday/Thursday devotional series, we are going to start a new series on Great Questions in the Bible. I hope you enjoy them
Genesis 3:1
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
In this passage, we see several firsts. This is the first question asked in The Bible. It is the first thing said by Satan in The Bible. Finally, it is the first attempt we see by Satan to undermine and cast doubt upon the truthfulness of God’s Word. In the thousands of years since this event occurred, nothing has changed. Casting doubt is still the primary tool The Devil uses to cast doubt upon the truthfulness of Christianity in general.
The reasons for this seem easily evident and obvious. Orthodox historical Christianity considers The Bible, to be inspired, inerrant, and the all sufficient rule for faith and life. The Word itself tells us this is true.
Psalm 119:160 160 Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.
2 Timothy 3:16, 17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
We don’t believe the Bible simply to be an unconnected collections of random, perhaps true stories from the history of God’s chosen people in the Old Testament and the Christians of the New Testament. We believe The Bible is a cohesive tapestry of a story from the first Word in Genesis until the last word in Revelation. What is the story? Well, it is the story of Redemption of course. It is the story of the Creation, Fall, and Redemption of man, from the beginning of history, until history is no more. God’s Word is the story of Jesus Christ. Because it is one story from beginning to end, the easiest way to make the story unravel is to pick apart the individual vignettes one at a time. No creation? Well then we evolved into our evil, sinful states. No fall? Well, then no need for redemption. No death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus? Well, then nothing else in The Book matters even a little bit.
Attacking the truthfulness and accuracy of Scripture has been, and will always be, the primary tool used by Satan to undermine true Christian faith. He still does that today, using non believers and even those who profess belief(just not belief in God’s Word) to carry out his attacks.
Let’s look at Satan’s tactics with Eve quickly. Now, we don’t know exactly how Eve got God’s Word concerning what she could and could not do in the Garden of Eden. She may have gotten it directly, or she may have gotten in from Adam. But she clearly got it, because she recited it back to Satan correctly. We see this in the following:
Genesis 3:2-3 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it,…………………
We will cover in a bit what Eve did by adding TO that Word, but she evidently knew what God had initially said.
Now, back to Satan. What was his tactic as he planted doubt in Eve’s mind about the truth of God’s Word?
First, He questioned if God, in fact, said what He said in the first place. Hath God Said?
Did God really say that?
How do you KNOW that is the inspired Word of God anyway?
Next, he clearly tried to make it seem as if following God’s Word was some awful burden to bear, rather than simply exactly what was said. Adam and Eve could eat any of the multitude of things in the Garden of Eden; only one tree was off limits. Satan emphasized the restriction rather than the bounty, saying: Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
See? That big, mean God won’t let you eat EVERYTHING!
God just wants to take your fun away!
Note here that Eve fell right into that particular trap, and seemed quite willing to jump on the bandwagon of God as bad guy. God simply said not to eat of that tree. That’s it. No more, and no less. But, following The Devil’s lead, Eve quickly added to God’s Word, saying not only could she not eat it, but neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
Here the practitioner of license says: Do anything you want, your sin is forgiven!
Here, the legalist says: Here is my list of rules you have to follow to get/stay saved
Finally Satan, after warming Eve up some, crossed over the line to an outright accusation that The Word was simply false. God said, don’t eat of that tree, lest ye die. Satan said, ye shall not surely die.
God lied
Adam made it all up when he told you that
It’s a forgery!
Science disproves it!
Jesus was Jew, and NEVER taught that!
So and so..and so and so….made that up!
You’re a moron!
And so it goes.
Has anything really changed?

Or, if not physically present, how were these words passed on to the writer of Genesis?
Last, who do you believe recorded the words of Genesis?

If you read the Bible and see how it substantiates itself, you’ll soon realize that God wrote the entire book. He inspired the words into his chosen men. I know you’ll dispute this as foolishness, but then again you don’t believe in my God so you won’t believe this either. This is exactly what I mean, when I say the devil uses men to distort the truth for their own purposes. Don’t try to draw me I

Proof is generally reserved for mathematical formula. However, the evidence is conclusive enough for experts to deem the Pentateuch to be historical fiction.
And this is the verdict reached by virtually the entire relevant academic community across the globe.
This includes most rabbis as well, by the way, and a large number of Christian Theologians, apparently.
Of course I cannot expect you , or anyone else , to accept the word of a simple Internet Blogger – I know I certainly would not – and therefore I strongly recommend you do what I did – research, research and research some more.
I began with the bible in one hand and an encyclopedia in the other and began marking passages and cross- referencing.
The internet was a lifesaver and hastened the realisation the bible was fiction by years.
Then I came across the archaeological side and this was the final nail in the coffin. Science.
So, I am afraid that unless you are suggesting there is a global academic conspiracy may I recommend you read some of the work by world-renowned archaeologists such as Israel Finkelstein and William Devers?
Once you begin to examine the biblical texts in a thoroughly honest and open- minded manner, paying attention to etymology and history it soon becomes abundantly clear that we are not dealing with history but historical fiction.
It is quite a shock at first – ask any religious deconvertee, but once the realisation dawns about what you are really dealing with, the desire to discover the genuine truth behind the texts becomes a lot more urgent than simply reading it with the belief that it is inerrant.
Why not have a go? It may not have the same effect on you and may simply strengthen your faith?
What is there to lose? Probably nothing but you will gain a much greater understanding of the bible.
Why not do a blog series of your adventure?
Begin at the beginning and see what turns up?
It would be fascinating.
Best of luck

I find it interesting that you have spent so much time and effort on disproving something that is so simply truth. As I said earlier, even Satan and all his angels know that God exists. This is precisely why he used scripture to test Jesus. What difference does all this scholarly knowledge make when it comes to the creator of the universe? If you dig into the internet you will also be amazed at the fact that our universe is uniquely designed – so much so that we can’t even begin to understand the complexity of it. The easy way out, I suppose, is to say that God doesn’t exist and that all this came about by chance, but I prefer my God’s explanation. He did it all. No matter who penned the Bible, He is still the author of it. Why are you trying so hard to ignore that?
I appreciate that you think you’re right, but so do I, so the best way to settle this is to accept each other and let it go. I won’t preach at you if you don’t try to convince me that what I believe is foolishness. I’m an old lady and I know better than to get involved in stuff like this. I’ll pray for you.

Ark. You reference “genuine” Bible scholars. The problem is, you define what is genuine, and that being those who agree with you. If they don’t agree, they are willfully ignorant, unqualified, or just plain stupid.
I find it odd that you constantly quote the passage in Peter, when in fact you quote it entirely out of context. That is not an instruction for Christians to engage in apologetics. It is not an instruction for Christians to defend their faith. It is a command to share and witness to those who inquire as to the joy in us. To share WHY we have it.
I am willing to allow this conversation between you and Kathy to go on if she wants to. But be warned, when you go “Ark” during it, which you will eventually, then the conversation is over. So, right up front, if you don’t like that, them move on along.

No, I define what are genuine bible scholars who study the book as they would any other tome and are not influenced by any priori notion of ”god breathed scripture”.
Thus, the interpretation of people like Habermaas, Licona, Craig and that infernally irritating half-wit Lee Strobel one can reject with impunity.
You censure me over context? Good grief, you are amazing!
Your interpretation of peter is exactly the reason why I chooses biblical scholars that do not go doey-eyed over the text and who are well-versed on the roper methods of hermeneutics, archaeology and etymology and not flagrantly ignorant of the bible’s history.

Believers need to be aware… nothing has changed… the devil’s best tool has always been and still is deception.
Most can see through an outright lie, unfortunately even born-again believers fall from time to time because the ‘word’ with lies added to it, or truth subtracted from it was used instead. He isn’t called the deceiver for nothing.

The greatest deceivers are the christians themselves and 40,000 different sects is evidence enough of this.

Hey ark (aka little stone god)
You provide a poor attempt at comedy, but you are out wearing your welcome.
The law, the prophets, and the psalms ALL spoke (and speak) clearly of the Lord and his person, work, and worth. From Genesis to Revelation, the melody is recognizable to an honest heart.
Your honesty is on trial, and you have been found guilty.
The Lord Jesus Christ (who is the Truth) spoke of Moses as a historical certainty. You, and your friends have shown contempt for heaven, for the oath of Christ, and the testimony of God Himself.
It must be awesome to depose the God of Creation from His throne, and to supplant yourself there, so you may be fed by your own infatuation. Nice work.
