False Christs Will Come
“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets,
and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it
were possible, they shall deceive the very elect,” Matthew 24:24.
Satan is very good at what he does. He does not come prowling around like the monster that he is; anybody with any sense would immediately recognize such evil and run the other direction. Satan succeeds because he shows up looking like the real thing. He brings an attractive look and good words. He may even come with signs and wonders that look as if they are from God Himself. He may even bring just enough truth so that our alarm bells are not set off. Satan is so good that he might “deceive the very elect.” He will not, of course, as those God has saved will not ever be deceived. John even tells us that this might happen, “if it were possible.” It is not of course, but the harm is great nonetheless.
Satan can certainly deceive the lost and keep them away from the truth of salvation by grace alone through faith alone; he can also pull the saved into false teachings which will cause them to teach things other than salvation by grace alone through faith alone. How do we know the difference between false Christs who might come from the real Christ who already did? This is easy, and we have already answered it. True Christianity is resting on the sufficiency of Jesus’ work for us. We are saved by grace alone, through faith alone. Alone is the keyword here. A false christ is anyone who teaches we have to add anything to Jesus’ work. Anything.
JUST A THOUGHT: Jesus saves completely. Jesus plus anything is a damnable heresy.
