Jesus Was Always in Control
“Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father,” John 10:17, 18.
The glory of this passage is Christ’s motive for laying down His life that He might “take it again.” In the Garden of Gethsemane He was not helpless. The multitude of soldiers “went backward, and fell to the ground” (John 18:6). He volunteered to go with them. He could have called “twelve legions of angels” (Matthew 26:53) to protect Him. But, He did not. Even on the cross, He was not helpless. He laid down His life voluntarily with full knowledge that He would rise again after the agony. “But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: for as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (Matthew 12:39, 40).
Jesus controls His kingdom work on earth through His churches by the power of the Holy Spirit.
THOUGHT: When God saw Jesus come out of the tomb, He saw you and me come forth from the grave. All the promises of our eternity with God rest on His cross and resurrection. We are accepted in the beloved because He was in charge of the entire plan of redeeming the creation back to His Father.
