The Doctrine of conditional salvation, or that one can lose their salvation, is a product of Satan himself. I am not saying that those who believe it are of Satan; I am saying the thought is from him. Why would I say such a thing? Allow me to briefly explain. First, let’s take a look at the following passage:
Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
In that passage, Paul was speaking to saved believers. What he was passing along from God was that we are to put on our helmet, and that helmet is the helmet of Salvation. He simply meant that Satan desperately wants us to be in a constant state of doubting our salvation. Paul was teaching us not to be distracted by those doubts, but to live secure in the assurance of our status as reconciled children of God.
Why does Satan care? The basic reason is that if we rest assured that our salvation is secure, then we can move along to the work God really wants us to do. If we spend our entire lives in a mad scramble to stay saved, then that is all we can do. I hate to sound repetitive, but it’s not about us! It is about our works done to honor and glorify God and not our efforts either to get saved or to stay saved.
As with works based salvation, works maintained salvation becomes about men rather than God. God has laid out the conditions that must be met for salvation: repentance toward God and faith in His Son Jesus Christ. Any other rules are not God’s rules, they are man’s rules. Who makes any such list of rules and conditions necessary to maintain salvation? Some person, of course. When we follow rules set by man, we begin to abandon God’s guidelines as revealed in His Word. When we do that, we begin to follow men rather than God; worse, we begin to follow ourselves. And that is what got us into trouble in the first place way back in Genesis Chapter 3
Are you saved? If you are, rest assured that your salvation is secure for all eternity. Quit worrying about what you have to do to keep it, and get busy doing the works God has actually called you to do.
Are you lost? Understand that this security can belong to you as well. Admit you are a sinner. Agree with God that He is right and you are wrong. Turn from your sin. Believe that Jesus paid your due penalty on the cross, and accept Him as your Savior and Lord today. Then, pick up your cross and follow Him.

Well said, and a much needed message. What kind of gift giver would God be if the recipient continued to wonder whether the gift was really theirs to keep?
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
He that hath the Son of God hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God,
that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

Amen, and thanks. I believe the undetstanding that we are secure is what allows us to do the real work, and focus on Him instead of us.

I’m confused. Is this a current writing or are you still posting old material? I didn’t think you were this dogmatic about eternal security issues.

This is still older stuff, Don. I’ve always been pretty dogmatic about it. I have friends who are not, and that’s okay. I just won’t go to church with thiem LOL. But me? I’m pretty dogmatic about it.

Well, I pretty sure you would go to church with me as I “think” that our pastor agrees with you based on some asides he has made in his sermons. But I have not taken the opportunity to ask him bluntly. I still haven’t found the “perfect” church and if I ever did, they wouldn’t accept me as a member.

Now, ain’t that some truth. I’d hate to find a perfect church, as I would not be a fit either!

🙂 🙂 Again loving this series Wally. God gave salvation. GAVE. He wouldn’t hide it, and like a scavenger hunt, make us spend the rest of our lives hunting for pieces of it. I also feel that “man” tends to live by the “if it seems to good to be true” way of thinking. God is not man. He knows how complicated we make things. He made our salvation, so that unlike the “law” we couldn’t make it out to be what “man” translated it to be.

You know Margaret, there is a fellow down at the assististed living place we go to twice a week who said that very thing….that sounds too good to be true. We are working with him, though. Pray on that please.

Yep, that is a trick of the old evil one. It’s not a coincidence that all this worlds teachings, tell us everything that will contradict God’s Word. “Too good to be true” is one, “nothing is worth having unless you work hard for it” is another.. I see how those worldly things that we are taught to “help look out for our well being and protect us” and they do in most cases, are in conflict, and condition us to distrust Godly things.
It will be my pleasure Wally to pray for him. I love to pray. I will do it now, and I will start thanking God for it 🙂

Wally, I am enjoying this series. You touched on some critical points. We’re not saved BY our works; rather, we are saved FOR good works. When we believe the lies that we’re never going to measure up or get it right, we begin to lose focus on the cross and “It is finished.” We’re already victorious and we ARE saved. The real battle here is about walking in the Spirit and in the identity of who we are in Christ rather than decide we’re the ONE sheep He could not save. Hey, He leaves the 99 to come find the lost 1. God bless my friend.

It is kind of interesting. My view of eternal security on a very practical level helps me to work as a chaplain sometimes in environments who aren’t for it. It gives me confidence to write, preach, witness and especially pray with people. Without it faith can become self focused and ineffective. Which is what I think you are getting at with conditional salvation being from Satan.

That is exactly it, Aaron! Our security enables us to speak boldly, knowing that it is the power of God that propels us, not our own. When we rely on us, the doubts can creep in quickly.

I love your explanation of the helmet of salvation. I will try to remember that the next time I doubt. I used to doubt my salvation all the time and re-ask Jesus to come into my heart.
