There are cats EVERYWHERE in Israel. By some accounts, there are over 2 million of them running around. If one goes in any village or city, they are all over the place. From what I understand, they were brought decades ago by the British to control rats and mice. Given the close living quarters for most people, that was probably an excellent idea. They tend to be running around anywhere there are concentrations of people, whether it be in crowded neighborhoods, churches where pilgrims congregate, and particularly restaurants. They seemed friendly for the most part, which is not hard to figure out, as I am sure they learn quickly that fuzzy and cute means food. I saw a couple of rather mean looking ones, and they are pretty skinny!
