Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.
Our Lord had some not so kind warnings to this village, among others. A good sized dig is going on there and some things were particularly interesting. First, the Synagogue there was in really good condition, and it was easy to see what it would have looked like. Second, is the very important fact that this was NOT a 1st century Synagogue, and Jesus never preached in it. I think later we will cover some of the differences between Synagogues in Jesus’ time and those that came later, but not tonight.
A couple of things are worth mentioning specifically. Take a look at the VIP seat in the photo below, then read the sign that interprets the writing on the seat. Nothing ever changes, does it?
Next. take a look at the figure on the stone carving below. Why on earth would a Jewish Synagogue have Medusa carved on their decorations? I guess trying to make our churches seem like the rest of the world is not new.
