Yesterday, Julie over at LIght and Life posted a great post about the God given joy of wonderful food. And another blogger, Sandra chimed in with some thoughts as well. We specifically got to talking about coffee.
Now, I love coffee. I love coffee in every variety and of every type. I don’t love so much the Starbucks kind of coffee, although it has its place. My Keurig Coffee maker and I are best friends. Well, ok, we are very close friends. My actual best friend is my Thermos which I use to carry coffee with me during the work day.
When do I drink coffee? When does the Earth spin on its axis? Odds are high that if I am awake I will have a cup, although I do try to cut myself off around 7 at night. It’s not the caffeine that wakes me up, it’s the bathroom breaks!
Did I mention I love coffee?
Ok, now let’s get serious for a few moments. God gave me coffee. Back in eternity past God, as He looked to the future, knew I would be here and He knew how much I would love coffee. That concept itself makes my head hurt, but it is a fact.
What had to happen to give me coffee? I’m no biologist, but some things had to happen to give me coffee. Even now, so many things in tandem have to occur just so that I can have a cup of coffee. How could those things have happened by random chance? The idea is preposterous!
God created the plant, which created the bean, which gave me coffee. God created the man who would some day find that those beans were really tasty when roasted and steeped in hot water. The list goes on, until eventually I have my Thermos filled.
God put many things here for us to enjoy, and He even implanted in us the desire to have and enjoy them. Food, beverages, sex, art, music; the list goes on and on. In fact, the list is all inclusive, because if it exists, it exists because God created it.
It’s not the desire itself, of even the things we desire that is the problem. Problem one comes when we enjoy anything in excess, inappropriately, or at the expense of God. Problem two is the converse to that, as that comes from excess legalism which causes us to say some things are wrong simply because they are enjoyable.

And thank you, Julie, for the inspiration to write that. I tend to run a little dry sometimes. I’m sort of a Joe Friday…just the facts Ma’m LOL. I need to loosen up sometimes. Must the the Baptist in me!

It’s good to have a little fun with a post now and then. I enjoyed it. Speaking of the Baptist in you, how’s the coffee at your church? Ours was REALLY weak, week after week. Now my husband calls any weak coffee “Baptist brew.”

LOL, when we fellowship it tends to be somewhat weak. But we hang out with our preacher some, and his dear wife really knows how to make a pot. Makes is strong just for me, which is actually a very loving and kind thing for her to do.

Oh, amen! I know God loves us, He gave us coffee. It is astounding how much had to come together to get those beans to my house. To just ponder all the variables, all the labor, the geography, weather, transportation, economic factors, that all work together to make my coffee possible, is just amazing. These things are best pondered over a cup of coffee, too 😉

My wife and I had a debate once over whether or not I would get coffee in Heaven. Since the Bible seems to teach that, in our new physical bodies we will possess, that we will eat, I couldn’t see why He would not provide coffee. Have to ponder that one over some coffee LOL.

Ha! The question than becomes, is coffee a spiritual need or a fleshly one? People like to imagine heaven is paved with streets of gold. Perhaps there are rivers of coffee there too? Or a fountain! I should like a beautiful fountain that just flows coffee all day. 😉

Well. I believe from my study, that The Bible clearly teaches our resurrection will be a physical one, just as Jesus’ was a physical one. I believe the New Heaven and New Earth to be a physical one also.
After His resurrection, Jesus ate and drank with His disciples.
Beyond that, nobody knows, right? But very cool to contemplate.
Yeah.. a fountain of coffee..awesome

For real though! Like, who takes some seeds and says, “I’m gonna cook these, but instead of eating them I’m gonna chop them up and put them in some hot water, and then drink it”?
What a crazy, awesome world we live in. 🙂 Ad marjoram Dei gloriam; He’s got quite a sense of whimsicality.

There was a time I might have you beat as a coffee lover – but when I had my stroke I was told no coffee – boy was that a wake up call (no pun intended). To make matters worse – we had a coffee business. After 2 years, I was told I could finally have 2 cups a day in the morning – I wasted no time brewing but I recognized it as a blessing from God! 😉

I don’t drink coffee anymore. Guess I was never a dyed in the wool lover of the brew. I do, however, love chocolate and anything sweet. Could account for my extra girth. Maybe I should start drinking coffee again!
